Voting Question: Business mathematics help?

Martin and Gregory have opened a store in Airdrie to build customized patio furniture. The projected selling price of a patio set will be $3,000. They estimate that the table will use twenty (20) board feet of lumber at a cost of $12 per board foot, $10 per table for hardware, and another $15 for custom finishing materials such as stain, varnish, or painting. Each patio set comes with four (4) chairs. Each seat will use six (6) board feet of lumber, $6 for hardware, and $10 for finishing materials. They estimate the labour time per table to be twenty-five (25) hours, and per seat, ten (10) hours for construction and finishing work. Martin found warehouse space that they can rent for $2,300 per month including heat. Other utilities will be $275 per month. Other required costs are insurance at $3,500 per year. They will pay themselves $20 per hour (treat this as a variable cost). They will pay a sales commission (based on selling price) of 4% per complete set sold. Gregory estimates that they can build 125 sets per year. I am asked to find..... 1.How many patio sets must they construct to break-even? Calculate the break-even point in: a.units. b.sales dollars. c.as a percentage of capacity.

Voting Question: is it me? or is it him? am I wrong for feeling this way?

I've been living with my boyfriend for 8months now, and we live in his home. This home we live in is a home him and his ex-wife lived in for 10years. From the beginning I felt a bit weird since this was a home he shared with his ex, and daughter, as a family. However, I went ahead and moved in feeling a bit weird. Now the thing is that till this day I still feel uncomfortable, and feel like this isn't my home. I feel this way because everytime I buy something for the home he then tells me to return to it to the store since he doesn't like it. He asked me to buy curtains, and so I did, but then he didn't like them so I had to take them back. Then I bought a soap dispenser and again he didn't like it, so i returned it. Then I bought bathroom fixtures, and after I installed them, he once again didn't like them so I ended up returning them. We then had gone shopping for a dining room set, and he had the final say on the table. We also went patio shopping and once again he had the final say on every items. I understand its his home, and that he's paying for these items, but I still feel upset since he won't allow me to decorate. I feel like I need his approval to buy the smallest things for the home and it ticks me off. Mind you his daughter and my son also live with us and I do every single thing in the home when it comes to cleaing, washing, doing laundry, and helping the kids with homework. Yet I feel like thats the only thing I'm good for. I told him how I felt and he disagrees and says that he does not have the final say. and that we are deciding things together, and that he just wants to have input on things we buy to decorate the home. Now I always thought men didnt really care about these sort of things, but apparently he truly cares. Also if i move a piece of furniture he puts it where he wants it, and thats where it stays. Today, I called him from the dept store and told him how they had really nice things for the patio in the home and he told me to take pictures of the items so he can view them before I buy... another crucial thing i want to add is that right now i'm not working (since I got laid off) and he pays for every the bills. and when we argue he sometimes tells me i should leave his home, and I've been so tempted yet can't since I can't afford it rt now..so between him always having to pick out things for the home, and always refusing to take things I buy for the home, and asking me to move out his home when we argue, and this being a home he shared with his wife,...every makes me feel like it could never truly be a place i can call my home..pls tell me what you think... and to make matters worse I even helped him clean out his garage which took 4hours and I helped him with yard work that was so incredibly exhausting for 3hours...mind you after being so dilerious and sleepy i walked into the home to take a break and 5min later he walks in and says "why didn't you tell me you were done?...you don't do that, you just don't walk away, you should've told me you were done"...now I held my breath and bit my tongue cuz I really just wanted to scream!

Resolved Question: My parents have a peice of furniture that is wood and was shellacked. It's shiny.?

My parents tried to paint it white (with regular wall paint I guess) and the paint is peeling off. They don't want to go through the trouble of sanding the shiny stuff off and refinishing it. Is there any paint that paints over shellacked shiny finishes? I saw a commercial for a spray paint that goes over plastic (like patio furniture) and I suggested that to them but I'm not really sure that won't peel off either. Plus it might be expensive because they'll probably need a lot of spray cans. Does anyone know about painting over an already shellacked piece of furniture? They don't want to go through the trouble of sanding the shiny stuff off and refinishing it. Does anyone know about painting over an already shellacked piece of furniture?

Voting Question: Ex-husband harassment?

We've been having continuing problems with my fiance's ex-husband. The main issue is always about custody, treatment, etc of her 6-year old daughter. He was verbally and physically abusive in their relationship and has an alcohol problem. Little has changed now, he is extremely verbally abusive of her. He will call and text incessantly to berate her and will coach her daughter to repeat hurtful things when he has custody (your mom doesn't adore you, you want to arrive live with me because, etc). We've made several police reports - One for criminal mischief and vandalism: he came to our home, stole items from our patio and dumped the ashes and charcoal from our grill every over the patio and furniture. Five for harassment: each time we give call and text message logs to the same detective that's been working our case since last October. He currently has three warrants for his arrest but the police seem reluctant to arrest him, even when we spoke with the police chief about our issues. Lately he has been hitting further below the belt. He has not picked her up for his weekly visit in eight weeks and his uncle has been keeping her on his weekends for the past three months. We have been documenting every time he is tardy, does not show, calls to cancel, and when she comes home stating she did not look her dad every weekend. Of course he always complains about having to pay child support, but he will not purchase any items for the child - school supplies, clothes, anything. He claims he 'gives her enough money'. He was to have custody this weekend from Friday until Monday - he sent a text five minutes before the pickup time stating 'I'm not picking her up, you have to deal with her. Have a good weekend! Ha!' As we had hotel reservations for a trip for the two of us this weekend we called his relatives and arranged an overnight stay until we returned. He called these relatives and threatened them not to take the child. Needless to say, our trip was off. We could have planned to take her with us if we had more than five minutes notice. Now today he is sending my fiance messages insinuating we are abusing her. This really has my blood boiling for him to shirk his responsibilities so he can drink and party on the holiday weekend (he left a voice mail to brag about this) and now has the audacity to accuse us of child abuse. So I am open to any advice. We have a lawyer already but he's not on retainer. We don't want to take his custody away but his actions are hurting his relationship with his daughter as he tries to 'receive back' at his ex-wife. We certainly don't mind having her full-time, we just hate having to wait on him six times a month to look if he will take advantage of his custody rights, it's becoming a huge burden for us. So is there anything we can do legally to cease every this? She did talk with detectives and her lawyer about pursuing full custody and having his rights revoked but we were told we did not have enough evidence to win the case. We don't have firm documentation of alcohol related incidents and she did not report the physical abuse during her marriage because she feared it would make things worse at the time. He told us we could file a case but he could not guarantee a verdict, but could guarantee the cost. I know money should not be an issue in this matter, but I can't ignore the facts. We were denied a restraining order by the local judge because we do not have a current incident of physical abuse. We were told to file a harassment charge instead. Nothing has been done with the harassment charges we've filed - they every went to the district attorney back in January yet it continues. I will encourage her to take the new evidence to her attorney again, her parents are actually offering financial support for the court fees after this weekend. Yes we do have phone records, text logs (I think it's around 90 pages now) plus times and dates of incidents, cancellations, no-shows, and the like. The lawyer had told us if the cops would actually pick him up on the harassment charge it would help our case quite a bit, but no progress has been made. I guess we'll need to call the sheriff and lawyer again this week. We know he does things like take his girlfriend's kids on trips while he doesn't have his daughter, but our evidence would be inadmissible since it's overdraft notices from his bank that still arrive to this address. We forwarded his mail and returned-to-sender for about a month before we just started trashing it. I'm not sure about the admissibility of things like his uncle (his usual babysitter) calling us stating 'I haven't seem him in over a week' while this jerk insists he spends every his time with her. Thanks for the advice you've offered so far.

Open Question: orange fluid leaks from patio chairs?

Hello, Something freaky is happening to my patio furniture. My building is undergoing pressure washing on the outside, so I brought the chairs inside over the day. They are made of a brownish metal (iron?) and a sort of mesh. So they have spent the day indoors, and I was just taking them outside again, when they started "bleeding" a bright reddish orange fluid. What can this be? Can rust appear in liquid form?!

Resolved Question: Hail damage and insurance?

I was wondering if anyone knows about hail damage and insurance. A bunch of my kids plastic toys, plastic patio furniture, garden hose and stuff like that was damaged - big holes straight thru. Should we expect to receive the full amount of money to replace them from our insurance? What do you think? We also have a wooden swing set $1500 that has hail damage to the wood - splintered pieces and big dents where the hail hit it. What would they do with that? We also need a new roof which I know is covered minus our deductible. Any info would be helpful. We have hail damage coverage so I know they will cover some of this. We will talk with our adjuster, but was wondering what your experience was. Thanks everyone. Keep the answers coming!

Resolved Question: Spite working neighbors what to do?

Last July 4th they were burning sticks in a tiny grill in a condo area that had had no rain in weeks, It was too close to the building and smelling up my patio furniture chairs pads and umbrella. I brought them in. Now they have moved a huge paint falling off table in the breezeway where people walk along w/ unmatching plastic chairs. Today they put a big plant behind the potted ones I had put out there 2 months ago in front of the building. In the back they have vegetable plants growing in paint buckets and egg crates. It looks bad. I called the HOA president and emailed her no response. What should I do? For Herby's benefit there are bylaws written for condo's on what's acceptable and what's not. None of this is acceptable.

Resolved Question: What height should I build a fence to keep out Raccoons?

I put a pond in a few months ago and ever since Ive lost tons of money in fish and plants, not to mention how difficult the upkeep has been on my pond because of raccoons. Just last night I lost one 8" beautiful koi and one 6" butterfly! Ive had it. Ive tried every the home remedies.. cayenne pepper, ammonia and now Ive decided to fence off the area where I think they are coming in from. Since I rent I want to spend as little as possible since Im about $800 in with this pond as it is. I had put up a 3 foot fence close some stairs because of my 2 year old but now would like to fence off a 20' section to try and keep them out. Any ideas on how high I should make it? I know the best would be maybe 5' or so but I would like to keep costs down. Does anyone know if they can climb over a 3 or 4' fence? I will be planting rose bushes along the back of it (I am moving them from another area of my yard) because Ive read they hate thorny plants. Any other ideas would be great. I cant use a scarecrow because of the size of my yard and location of my patio furniture. Im sick of these little shi*ts and am about a day away from figuring out how to kill them... unfortunately I am an animal lover even if they are eating my fish as midnight snacks. Id be glad to add a link for photos if that might make it easier to tell. Once they are over the fence it could be a total of 7 feet or so to fall (because of a wall the fence will be over) so Im hoping that might deter them too. Please help!

Resolved Question: One year anniversary present for my husband?

Our anniversary is coming up on June 13th, and it's our one year! Yay! I don't know what I should receive him - we basically have everything that we need, and anything else would be luxury. I'm mentioning that because we are on a budget, and I have maybe $200 to spend, and that's only if I find something absolutely perfect. I was thinking of a big screen TV, and I went around looking for a cheap used one - I found a 42 inch for $150, and I loved it! My husband has talked about wanting one, but only when we could completely afford it. He likes to try and guess presents, and when he guessed TV, he said "If it's a TV absolutely not - the one we have works fine, and I don't want a new one." So...there goes that idea. I didn't admit to thinking about getting him a TV, because I might still receive it anyway, because I know he'd adore it, and it's such a good price. We just got a new BBQ with every the fixins, we have new patio furniture, our cars run fine, he has a complete set of tools... apart from a nice TV, I can't think of a single thing that he'd like. He's not big on concerts, and with only two days off work, we really can't go anywhere really great. I need some awesome ideas, because I really want to show him that being married to him has been wonderful, and that I adore the guy! Going out to dinner is a given, so that wouldn't really be the gift. I would need something else. Also, I am going to receive a copy of our wedding vows, print them up, and frame them - that'll cover the "paper" portion of the anniversary. I just need the big gift sorted out. Thanks for your help! I just re-read, and just wanted to let you guys know that everything that we possess, we receive used from craigslist. We are really good at finding awesome deals, so don't worry, we're not reckless with money!!

Resolved Question: Person at my work acts like he's the boss. What do?

I work for a home improvement store and there's this guy who works with me who thinks he's my boss even though he isn't management. Everyday, he's waiting for me at the punch in clock, as soon as I punch in, he tells me to go do this, go do that. He lies to me that the real managers tell him to tell me to do what ever task even though the real managers have no idea. I'll give an example, one time he told me to clean the patio furniture storage area (which is a pain), I said whatever, OK just to receive him off my back, then I went to my manager and asked him if he wanted me to clean the storage area, just to double-check. he said he never told anyone to do that and told me to go do something else instead. later I walked by him and he gave me a dirty look. Another time he told me to go bring down some merchandise from a rack. Again I said whatever to receive him off me but instead did something else. He noticed me and immediately he's on me demaning to know why I wasn't doing what he told me to do. He also sucks up to management so much it's not silly. At this store we have General store managers and department managers. He's always walking with them, talking with them, laughing with them and generally sucking up to them. When I started working there he was every ready sucking up to management (not as much) but he would do his fair share of work, even more sometimes. But now every he does is walk around with the managers or by himself checking up on everyone to make sure they're working, They even game him a radio so they can always reach him. Iv'e had arguments with him about how he needs to cease but the just starts going off on me how they (management) tell him that he has to do it and so on. After the last argument, I'm guessing he told my department manager and he came up to me and basically told me to close up. I've tried to ignore the guy but he's always on me. I would go up to the General store managers but he's like best friends with every three of them so they'll just ignore me. I've been there a year and I know what I'm supposed to do, I don't need anyone telling me. What should I do to fix this situation? Sorry for my question bieng so long, its just that it really grinds my gears.

Resolved Question: Someone or something is making my patio cushion fabric melt or burn?

Noticed on my second set of patio furniture which is less than a week old that I have burn marks on my patio furniture cushions. They are nearly a foot long and bad enough i have to dispose of my cushions. I though my old set someone had accidently spilled grease on them or something and in the sun they melted the fabric as the cushions were old. However in less than a week on my new cushions I noticed on big long burn looking mark at an angle. Then I noticed a few strips of dead or dying grass at the same angle next to the seat. The angle is suggesting a neighbor who we don't talk to but have had issues with on noise complaints is spraying them. They would have to shoot the stuff about 25 feet or more over their fence. Don't want to point fingers but its scary as I have tiny kids and its very odd. Any suggestions or advice or what this chemical burn could be from?

Resolved Question: how to get the neighbors cat to go home?

our neighbor is a very nice guy, single dad of two girls and i think they're pretty strapped for cash most of the time and it seems that feeding and caring for their cat is very low on their priorities. their cat is a typical neighborhood cat (we live in an apartment complex) so it's always out there when we arrive and go and everyone says hi to it. we went out on our patio last week and find the cat laying there on the concrete looking like it's about to die. totally unresponsive, covered in fleas and scratches, missing most of its hair and just skin and bones. we had just given our (100% indoor) cats their flea medicine... they had recently started scratching a lot, to which we now imagine is probably due to this dirty cat laying on our patio furniture and we're probably bringing them inside (yuck) but we had one dose of medicine left, so we put it on this cat and placed food and water in front of it... it laid there like that for a couple days. we continued to care for it until it resembled a living being again and now it will not go away. he still runs off when he hears his owners car tug up, and they usually take him in their home at night. but otherwise he is always on our patio, sitting at our door, sometimes crying, and it is driving our cats crazy. they're every fixed, but territorial. one of my cats got out today and went after it, and i am worried about it happening again. i don't want them to battle and have my cat catch something. where do you draw the lines of helping an animal in need and finding the critter a complete nuisance (bringing fleas into our home, costing us money feeding him, upsetting our cats, etc.) and what can we do to discourage it from living on our patio every day till the owners arrive home? we feel so guilty about wanting him to go away, but we already have three cats that we take very good care of, and just don't have extra money to feed an extra mouth. side note: our patio is enclosed with a fence that does not go every the way to the ground, so the neighbors cat is able to walk right in to our space. i would appreciate any helpful suggestions that might be good for us and our cats, as well as the needy neighbor cat. thank you!

Voting Question: Strip stain off freshly stained wood?

I've been restoring some cedar patio furniture and today I sanded a seat down for staining. I used Minwax Red Mahogany and tested the stain for color on a tiny portion of the seat. The color looked good so I continue to do most of the seat. As I was moving along, the color looked a bit darker than where I had tested, but I assumed it would dry lighter. Unfortunately, the color ended up being very dark, almost black. What should I do to strip the stain off? Should I just sand it off or use a stripping agent first? Also, once I receive rid of the stain, should I use a lighter stain, or just do a very light coat with the same color?

Voting Question: ANSWERS! My dog attacks patio furniture.?

I have a 4 year old English Bulldog who believe it or not is very hyper. Whenever he's outside and I even touch my patio furniture he goes into attack mode. I mean I almost have to choke him out to receive him to let go, even when people are sitting in it. I don't know what to do because we want to have kids but I'm afraid this is some underlying problem that could turn into something else. Plus I'd like chairs without teeth marks in them. The vet was no help with answers.

Resolved Question: How can I stop black cast aluminum furniture from leaving black marks on everyone who sits on it?

Years ago we purchased the black cast aluminum furniture called "Chandler" patio furniture from JCPenny. (you can still look it on their website by looking up the word Chandler). The problem has been that if you touch it, it colors everything black, like a very inky newspaper. We've tried to wash it twice a month and wax it with car wax at the beginning and end of every season like most websites say, but have never been able to correct this problem. We've had more than one person tell us that if we seal it with a spray sealant, it will just chip off and take bits of the powdered coating off with it. We adore the furniture otherwise, but would like to know how best to take care of it. We would appreciate any genuine advice that correctly addresses this problem. Thank you!

I've tried spraying wasp and hornet spray at them but they still arrive back...

Resolved Question: Vinyl Patio furniture straps....?

I have been looking for a local business in the Clarksville, TN area that carries the vinyl straps to repair patio furniture. I have found tons of places that carry patio furniture with vinyl straps but not the supplies to fix them. Not even Home Depot or Lowes carry the supplies. I have found them online but, I like to view stuff in person before buying it especially when dealing with a company I have no idea is legit or not. Does anyone know a business in or around Clarksville, TN that sells vinyl straps for repairing patio furniture? I am not against driving a bit to receive to a place, just not going cross country.

Resolved Question: Need input about speakers and home entertainment system (details inside)?

I want to have my dvd player, cd/radio player, and television in the same area of the living room. But, I want a spaker system that I can hook up to every of them, even if I have to do it through a hub of some nice (a modulator maybe?). Also, I would like to be able to add speakers as time goes on, like maybe put speakers on the patio, so I can hear to music from my cd player or radio, without being in the living room. I don't want a wireless set up. A bonus would be that i could hook my PC to the speaker system as well, but that is not really necessary. Questions: What nice of hub would I need for this? What nice of connectors would it need? What nice of speakers (brands/models) would you recommend? (They don't have to make the windows rattle, but they should be noisy enough for a lovely home theater experience.) Also, I am concerned about price. I am not that particular about quality. My furniture is mostly stuff I picked up off the side of the road, this is how low rent I am. But I will be coming into a bit of money in the close future, with which I will be building and furnishing a new home. Still, budget will be a concern. A nice sound system is something I want for my elderly mom who lives with me. I want to pamper her in these years, as she has had a difficult life.

Resolved Question: Was this a horse fly?

I was looking out into my backyard when every of a sudden an ENORMOUS fly-looking insect is buzzing strangely around every our patio furniture/plants. It was enormous and noisy, could this have been a horse fly? It was 2-3x larger than the average home fly. I looked up a picture of a horse fly and it seemed similar but I'm not sure! Hmmm the only body of water is close our home at a park but, it tends to rain quite often. If this really was a horse fly i'm a bit surprised. Nope wasn't that moth, I live in California close the bay area=)

Resolved Question: Concrete patio worth investment?

My husband and I possess an end unit townhouse with no real private backyard. We have a tiny concrete patio in the back that is just big enough for a grill and our bikes. I recently found out that zoning will allow us to expand the patio and it will probably cost us around $1500 to create a big fenced in patio with enough room for furniture and entertaining. We don't plan on living here forever and will try to rent the place in about 2 years, unless the market turns around in which case we would sell. Is this worth the investment? I think since every the units around us are the same that with a private "yard" we may have an easier time selling. Hubby thinks no. Any real estate experts out there that can weigh in?
